Sandy Althaus was a woman of exceptional compassion and love. Her unwavering faith in Jesus, deep devotion to her family, and genuine care for every individual she encountered made her a beacon of light to those who knew her. Having owned a small business in the community and thriving on her independence, Sandy's life took an unexpected turn when she underwent a life-altering amputation that forced her into retirement. During the rehabilitation process, she faced physical and emotional hurdles with grace, strength and a great sense of humor, inspiring those around her with her unwavering spirit. However, it was also during that period that she became acutely aware of the solitude that often plagues residents in nursing homes.
Despite the consistent visits from her own family, Sandy Althaus couldn't help but notice the heart-wrenching reality faced by some residents in the nursing home: a profound sense of loneliness and the absence of regular visitors. Among the residents Sandy encountered, there was one woman who stood out in her mind—a once successful professional who had endured the loss of her husband and the unfortunate circumstance of two bad falls and a broken hip.
This woman, despite her sharp mind, found herself trapped in a monotonous routine, spending her days alone, passively watching television, and being wheeled to the dining hall for her meals where she was assigned to eat with others who may or not be able to carry a conversation. This observation stirred a deep empathy within Sandy and she began to brainstorm a program that would match volunteers throughout the community with residents to restore a sense of purpose, joy and ensure they received the companionship and human connection they so desperately needed.
While it is undoubtedly bittersweet that Sandy passed away before she could witness the charity come to fruition, it is our hope that her impact and the seeds she planted will continue to grow and flourish in her absence.
